Description

Sonic displacement is a sound installation in which the live acoustic space is manipulated via extended delay lines and fragmentaton of sonic content.The acoustic space is sampled and subsequently fed back upon itself in endless cycles. Installed in Kunstraum on the first of march 2002,The work was active for approximately 4 hours in which a wiide range of material was manipulated ranging from a subtle cough to the dense chatter of gallery patrons. An AKG stereo microphone was utilised to capture the various environmental acoustics . This sound was then cycled back into the space after 3 minutes (the delay can range up to several hours in the current software revision) in both randomly fragmented pieces and the original linear content. The audio was presented back into the space by a series of 4 speakers which, due to their proximity to the microphone, were subsequently re-recorded. Subtle cyclic feedback loops are created through this interaction. The sound gradually evolves throughout the course of the event as the sonic space is continually updated, fragmented and transformed.

Technical Information

Sonic Dispacement is an extension of the tape based death echo installation that was done several years earlier. Instead of analogue tape however custom software was created in the max/msp development environment to capture manipulate and present the audio. Here is an image of the current software interface. Ist eine experimentelle Arbeit des zur Zeit in Österreich (bei Time’s up) arbeitenden australischen Künstlers Alex Davies.
Im Vordergrund von sonic displacement steht die Frage nach der Manipulation von Sounds innerhalb der Achse von Zeit und Raum.
Durch verzerrende Momente modifiziert er die Wahrnehmung .von scheinbar bekannten Environments:
Vergangenheit wird Gegenwart und das Jetzt Zukunft. Der akustische Raum reflektiert sich permanent selbst in seiner Unendlichkeit.

Alex Davies lebt in Sydney und arbeitet mit diversen Medien im Bereich Film, Digitals und Sound Installationen.
Vor allem in den letzten Jahren gilt sein Interesse den unterschiedlichsten Aspekten von „akustic“, die sich mit physischen und psychischen Dimensionen von Sounds und ihren räumlichen Ordnungen auseinandersetzten.
