| Heterodyne is a quadraphonic sound installation by alex davies. It was exhibited for three hours only on wednesday the 1st of August 2001. The work consisted of 4 discreet channels of pure sine tones ranging from 20 Hz to 500 Hz (the work my be heard here). Depending on where the audience moved within the space, the sounds would combine in the ear differently and hence even the slightest movement would modify the perceptible sound. It is important to note the contrary to the documented images of the actual installation space where the work was installed, the environment was in fact completely black. This however does not lend itself to visual documentation unfortunately. The images of the lit environment are purely included to give an indication of the size of the space and speaker placement. The audience however was immersed in complete darkness, void of visual stimuli after exiting the foyer area. The combination of this visual deprivation and 1200 watts of acoustic energy created an immersive sonic space in which sonic modulations drifted. The work explores both the complex interactions of individuals in acoustic spaces and also the bioeffects of sound on humans. |
