Acoustic
Trauma : Bioeffects of Sound

" any unwanted sound, soft or loud, sweet or nasty, creates a multidimensional envelope that does more than intrude - it takes over not only your acoustic space, but your mind space as well. Acoustic intrusions reduce your freedom of thought. There is no escaping sound. It meets your body and forcibly enters your mind, not just through your ears but also via your bones, your flesh, and your body cavities." Pellegrino, Ron, Loud Music And Hearing Loss |

The work is an investigation into both the psycho-physiological and environmental effects of high intensity acoustic energy, particularly in the low frequency region, via the design and construction of experimental acoustic emitters. The device is a pneumatic resonator constructed out of marine alloy, stainless steel and is fed by a 8KW air blower. The fundamental frequency produced is 50 Hz. Other investigations into high intensity acoustic emitters taking the form of a impulse noise devices are available here - acoustic shockwave canon When operational, the resonator has a profound effect on the surrounding acoustic ecology and subsequently individuals present. This manifests itself in a number of complex ways which are detailed in the associated paper available below. More extensive information regarding this project will be available soon..... A PDF version of my honors paper detailing these investegations @ the University of New South Wales - College of Fine Arts is available < here > 808KB A hypertext version is available < here >however the overall quality is rather dubious in addition to missing footnote references. A small but growing research archive on the subject and related areas is accesible < here > |
